Day 1

Arenal

Transfer to Arenal Volcano National Park. Walk to La Fortuna Waterfall with a swim, 2 miles, easy to moderate (with a short but steep descent and ascent of 365 steps)

From your meeting point in San José, with your private guide, you leave the city driving north toward the Arenal Volcano National Park through the tropical plantations and cattle ranches of the northern central lowland plains, about a 3½-hour drive with stops en route. The 5,358-foot peak dominates the primary rainforest of the national park, where your first steps are a short walk to the Fortuna Waterfall. A short but steep trail traverses the lush forest to the base of the 200-foot falls, with an inviting clear pool perfect for a dip before the climb of 365 steps back to the vehicle and a 15-minute drive to your resort hotel—an award-winning tropical retreat.

Day 2

Arenal

Canyoning, half-day private tour; Sky Tram gondola and Sky Trek zip line half-day tour

Awakening in the tranquility of your private casita, this morning you set off for a guided canyoning and waterfall rappelling adventure. With a thorough safety briefing and equipment fitting, the tour is an exhilarating experience of rappelling down a series of four tropical waterfalls and trekking along beautiful trails in a pristine canyon of gorges and lush rainforest. You break for lunch at a favorite local restaurant. Adventure and stunning scenery continue in the afternoon on the Sky Tram and Sky Trek combination tour. The Sky Tram is a 20-minute gondola ride up the mountain, including a stop on an observation platform with incredible views of Arenal Lake, surrounding forested mountains, and Arenal Volcano. From the top of the gondola, the return trip is via the Sky Trek—a 3,280-foot long zip-line system that gives you an exhilarating ride back down the mountain through the rainforest. The order of these two half-day activities may change based on local conditions. Later, you return to your resort to unwind either in its spa or your private Jacuzzi, and later enjoy dinner in its excellent restaurant.

Day 3

Arenal

Lava flow walk, 4 miles, easy to moderate; Arenal Hanging Bridges, 3 miles, easy

This morning, a private guided walking tour takes you to trails surrounding the Arenal Volcano to see firsthand the geology and how the flora and fauna are reclaiming the landscape. A young volcano of just 7,000 years, Arenal Volcano erupted in July 29, 1968, destroying the region west of its base with hot gases, rocks, and, later, lava flows. Under close observation by seismologists, today the volcano steams quietly and heats local rivers that have been developed into popular hot springs and spas. Forest vegetation is quickly returning and covering the massive rock fragments and lava flows, and wildlife once again flourishes in and around the park. Animals include several monkey species and myriad birds such as hummingbirds and keel-bill toucans. This afternoon, you enjoy a walk along the stunning Arenal Hanging Bridges trail—a network of suspension bridges and trails through the rainforest and terrain of ravines and small waterfalls with panoramic treetop views opening up over forest and the volcano. Here also, wildlife is abundant—toucans, white-faced capuchin monkeys, poison dart frogs among rich vegetation of palms and giant trees. In the later afternoon, you can choose to visit the natural hot springs— a product of the volcano’s geothermal activity—in a peaceful authentic setting, before returning to your resort for a final dinner.
