Iguazu Falls

overview

Iguazu Falls is what Niagara wants to be when it grows up. This spectacular system of waterfalls boasts 275 roaring, tumbling torrents of water, spread over two miles. Over 269 feet tall at its highest (that’s 90 feet higher than its North American cousin!), Iguazu is simply awe inspir¬ing—a worthy addition to anyone’s bucket list. We make the experience even more memorable with private, guided walks in two national parks around the falls, and engaging activities like a private boat safari, rafting, and rappelling. You can also savor the rich biodiversity of the region: 2,000 species of trees and plants, 400 species of birds, a panoply of monkeys, caimans, tapirs, and butterflies. Your lodgings will inspire as well: a newly renovated colonial hotel that combines white-linen grandeur with genuine warmth, the perfect way to experience one of the world’s natural wonders.

Day 1

Iguazu Falls

Arrival at Foz do Iguaçu airport; transfer to Iguazu National Park; visit to Iguazu Falls from the Brazilian side

You are met upon arrival of your flight into Brazil’s Foz do Iguaçu airport in the state of Paraná and transferred about 30 minutes to your hotel, the only property located inside the 450,000-acre Iguazu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. Spread out over almost two miles, the numerous waterfalls and cascades of the Iguazu River drop between 200 to 300 feet from the Paraná Plateau, before the waters continue on their course to the confluence with the Paraná River.

You begin your exploration of the famous Iguazu Falls on the Brazilian side, by embarking on a Macuco Safari (a tour on foot, by boat, and electric car). First, a short drive in an open electric car through the national park with a guide who points out the riparian forest’s rich biodiversity; next, a short walk leads to the shore of the Iguazu River, where you board a private motorboat (life jackets provided) that navigates to the part of Iguazu Falls known as Canyon Falls, the closest river access point, providing magnificent views. Concluding this two-hour expedition, you return to your hotel to enjoy its many amenities and privileged park location.

*Private cars are no longer permitted within the park, therefore all transport within the park is made via park vehicles.

Hotel das Cataratas

Iguaçu National Park, Brazil

The only hotel located within the Iguazu National Park is just a short stroll from the Iguazu Falls on the Brazilian side, so that guests enjoy exclusive access to this magnificent sight in the evening and at dawn, when the park is closed to other visitors. In addition to its unrivalled location, this luxurious hotel, which is part of the Orient Express group, is built in colonial Portuguese style and offers well-appointed rooms, lovely grounds and gardens with swimming pools, a tennis court, two restaurants (with alfresco dining), bars, and spa facilities.

Day 2

Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls; Visit to Iguazu Falls from the Argentinean side; 1 mile, easy walking

A total of 80 percent of the falls are within Argentina, and today you visit the falls from the Argentinean side—with its wider panorama than on the Brazilian side. The border between Brazil and Argentina is at the famous Devil’s Throat, the highest and deepest point of the entire complex of falls. Incredibly engineered walkways, both upper and lower, take you above the Devil’s Throat, and also along the long stretch of falling water and river into Argentina, providing up-close views and a thrilling experience. With time for lunch in Argentina (the Sheraton restaurant is recommended), by later afternoon you return to Brazil to enjoy a final evening at your hotel.

*Please note that U.S. residents must pay a reciprocity fee PRIOR to arrival in Argentina. Please refer to Country Facts at a Glance document for further details and current fee.
