Granada

Arrival in Granada

Arrive in Granada on your own schedule and check into your luxurious hotel in a beautifully renovated convent in the historical city center. Enjoy your hotel’s amenities or venture out into one of southern Spain’s most atmospheric cities. With the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the city is itself perched high at about 2,400 feet, yet is just an hour’s drive from the Mediterranean Coast. Granada is undoubtedly best known for the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Alhambra—the Moorish citadel and palace that represents one of the finest examples of medieval Spanish Muslim architecture.

Day 2

Granada

Private guided walking tour of the Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens; Afternoon hands-on tile painting lesson with local artist; Evening tasting of local food and drink

A day dedicated to viewing and learning about Moorish history and art begins at your hotel, where your guide meets you after breakfast to lead you on a walking tour and visit to the magnificent Alhambra Palace, the highest expression of the culture of Moorish Spain. Of particular note are the luxuriant Generalife Gardens—brimming with fountains and flower-scented alleyways—and the intricate carved plasterwork and colorful tiles of the myriad structures. Completely walled and on a plateau above the city, what began as a military stronghold in the 11th century transitioned into an extensive complex of palaces and sultans’ residences through the 13th century. Your tour ends with time to relax with lunch on your own—the nearby Parador, the traditional Spanish hotel, is a particularly lovely spot to dine with views over the Generalife. After lunch you are met by Esperanza, a local ceramic artist, who takes you partway down the hill to her beautiful home on the slopes of the Alhambra. Here, in her studio, she introduces you to the local art and technique of painting on tile, a blend of history and hands-on learning; you pass a few hours following your inspiration as you design and paint your own tiles that she will then fire and deliver to your hotel. You depart her studio later in the afternoon, to continue to explore at your own pace or perhaps return to your hotel for a short siesta. Later this evening, you are accompanied to the delightful garden-patio of a special restaurant in the Albaicín for an exclusive tasting of some of Andalucía’s best gastronomic products—from olive oils to sherry, cured meats and cheese, and wines. The sheer number of different dishes and paired beverages that you try actually make this “tapas”-style tasting a substantial dinner.

Day 3

Granada

Private guided walking tour of Albaicín neighborhood with market visit and lunch in a private home with hands-on cooking lesson

Today is devoted to discovering the flavors of Granada through two of its historical and colorful districts. You meet your walking-tour guide to stroll through the Albaicín neighborhood, also a UNESCO World Heritage site for its medieval Moorish narrow winding streets and architecture, which make it the most Arabic-feeling part of Spain’s most Arabic city. Your guide describes the history of this ancient part of Granada along with the culture, politics, and economics of contemporary Spain. The walking tour culminates at the local market, where you are met by an exuberant local who invites you into her home for lunch of a variety of fresh tapas. First, you take part in buying the lunch provisions before making your way to the cozy family home tucked away at the top of the Albaicín. You join your host around the kitchen table, to help prepare a range of Spanish classics or to simply chat and enjoy a glass of wine as she prepares and serves the meal. From the Albaicín, you overlook the houses of the Sacromonte district, on Valparaiso Hill, originally settled by gypsies living in whitewashed caves carved into rock. The gypsy music and dance made this area the home of flamenco. You return in the early evening to your hotel, feeling steeped in local culture, for a final Andalusian dinner with your host’s recommendations.
