Edinburgh

overview

In Edinburgh—Scotland’s “Athens of the North”—medieval grandeur is in splendid contrast with the modern vitality of a city renowned for its concerts and festivals. Venture down the Water of Leith, a 12-mile riverside walk that links some of the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods with stands of woodland. For a taste of Scottish high drama, visit legendary Edinburgh Castle flanked by the city’s Old Town of Reformation-era buildings and quaint pub-lined alleys. On a private tour, your guide will point out details many tour groups miss. Browse the shops of the Royal Mile or climb the peak of Arthur’s Seat. At day’s end, return to your four-star hotel, a modern boutique property in the heart of the city.

Day 1

Edinburgh

Arrival to Edinburgh

Upon your arrival in Edinburgh, you check into your comfortable four-star hotel—ideally situated in the heart of the city. There are no scheduled activities this afternoon, leaving you time to settle in and begin to explore Edinburgh or unwind from your travels in the sauna or steam rooms or with a dip in the pool. Dinner is on your own this evening in one of Edinburgh’s many fine restaurants—the hotel concierge can assist with recommendations and reservations.

Day 2

Edinburgh

The Water of Leith: Stockbridge to Roseburn, easy city walking, 3–4 miles. Afternoon guided walk including Edinburgh’s Castle and Old Town District, easy city walking, 3 hours

This morning, you are met in the lobby of the hotel by your expert local guide and embark on a private guided walk that takes you along a green corridor winding through the heart of Edinburgh, along the Water of Leith—in total a 12-mile-long riverside route that links the picturesque Stockbridge and Roseburn neighborhoods. Led by a local expert, you learn about the river’s human and natural history, and its transformation from the city’s industrial past to a site of protected wildlife, with more than 80 species of birds. The Museum of Modern Art is a stop on the walking route, before you loop back to the center, emerging onto Princes Street, the city’s landmark and main shopping street beneath Edinburgh Castle. You pause for lunch in a café in the medieval Old Town before continuing up the “Royal Mile”—exploring intriguing courtyards and inviting alleyways along the way. Upon reaching Edinburgh Castle, situated on its distinctive volcanic peak, you set off on a guided tour, exploring the fortress that dates from the 12th century, and concluding with superb views across the city from the ramparts.

The remainder of the afternoon is yours to enjoy— your guide may suggest a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia, permanently moored here, or to the controversial modern Parliament building (every local has an opinion on it!). Alternatively, you may choose to visit some of the city’s excellent museums. Your guide can also provide suggestions for dinner, and your hotel can assist with reservations.

Departure from Edinburgh

This morning you depart Edinburgh at your leisure after breakfast at your hotel—perhaps opting for a self-guided hike up to the little peak of Arthur’s Seat before you bid the city farewell (where you are rewarded for the approximately 800-foot climb with panoramic views of the city and beyond, over the waters of the Firth of Forth to the North Sea.)
