Chiang Mai

overview

Thailand’s “Rose of the North” combines lush jungle scenery, dramatic mountain views, and the cultural identity of its indigenous people into one memorable experience. You can connect with them all on our four-day adventure: receive holy blessings from itinerant monks as they beg for alms in a local market; climb the 306 steps of the Naga staircase to a magnificent temple swathed in gold leaf; give your cooking skills a workout with a hands-on class in a local craft village; ride elephants in the Chiango Dao; or simply relax on a serene trip down the Ping River on a bamboo raft. Through it all, you’ll enjoy the luxury and tranquility of a thoroughly modern hotel accented with traditional design flourishes.

Chiang Mai

Arrival in Chiang Mai

Upon arrival at Chiang Mai Airport, you are met and transferred to your charming boutique hotel in an authentic neighborhood within walking distance of many of the small city’s sights. The property incorporates elements of Lanna Thai and colonial architecture in its deluxe rooms with polished wood and rich colors. In addition to a restaurant serving Thai and Western cuisine, also available are a pool lounge, library, fitness room, spa, and swimming pool and Jacuzzi. About 400 miles north of Bangkok, Chiang Mai is known for both its dramatic landscapes and its unique indigenous culture. Founded in 1296, it is northern Thailand’s economic and cultural center. On the Ping River, it is surrounded by high mountain ranges of lush jungle with many communities of tribal groups. You may choose to relax after your travels and dine at your hotel or step out with the concierge’s suggestions to choose from many excellent Thai and fusion restaurants.

Day 2

Chiang Mai

Early morning walk and private tour of Chiang Mai; Visit to Doi Suthep and Meo hill tribe community; evening hands-on Thai cooking class

Early this morning, just at dawn, you join your private guide for the opportunity to participate in a very special Thai Buddhist custom of giving donations to monks carrying their alms bowls; walking quietly from their temple, they receive food and in turn give blessings to the givers. Later this morning after breakfast, you tour the historic center of Chiang Mai town, especially its many ancient and intricate Buddhist temples. A short time later, a relaxing drive takes you up the slopes of Doi Suthep to visit a Meo hill tribe community. Originally from South China, the Meo typically live on mountain peaks or plateaus above 3,000 feet. You get a perfect introduction to the scenery of northern Thailand along mountain roads and through forests as you drive to the 600-year-old Doi Suthep Temple, near the summit of Doi Suthep. A climb to the site is via a magnificent Naga (dragon-headed serpent) staircase of 306 steps. You stop for an authentic Thai lunch before returning to your hotel. In the late afternoon, you transfer to a village resort set on a lush green slope overlooking rice fields and nearby mountain scenery—the perfect setting for learning how to cook traditional Thai cuisine. Fresh herbs and ingredients used in Thai classics such as Tom Yam Gung are grown on site in a tropical-style garden. You prepare several other dishes that you enjoy for dinner. You may choose to linger at the resort to enjoy its tranquil surroundings as well as its spa and herbal steam bath with a variety of treatments (at your expense).

Day 3

Chiang Mai

Guided visit to Chiang Dao Elephant Camp; Afternoon aromatherapy massage treatment

This morning after breakfast, an early start brings you and your private guide about 30 miles north of Chiang Mai to the Chiang Dao Elephant Camp on the banks of the Ping River. Once used in the forestry industry, elephants here are well cared for and still display the skills once learned as working animals. After learning about their training from their mahout, and enjoying a short ride, you proceed to join a gentle river excursion on a traditional bamboo raft (weather and river conditions permitting). Later relax over a traditional Thai lunch. Returning to Chiang Mai, a final stop takes you to an orchid farm to view a variety of some of Thailand’s most exquisite blooms. Upon arrival to your hotel, perhaps enjoy its pool or high tea (reservations recommended). You are also treated to a 60-minute aromatherapy body massage at the on-site spa. This evening, you may opt for a final stroll along the Ping River to choose from one of the many riverside restaurants for a delicious meal of northern Thai cuisine.
