Day 2

Bangkok

Private guided Bangkok tour: temples and Grand Palace; Chao Phraya River cruise by private long-tail boat

Thailand’s capital since the late 18th century, the “City of Angels”—one part of its long Thai name—is also the country’s economic and spiritual center, and, with a population of 11 million, one of Asia’s great cities. Multifaceted, its districts range from modern skyscrapers to bustling markets and canals, to temples and royal palaces. This morning, you visit the magnificent temples and Grand Palace of the Rattanakosin neighborhood with an expert guide. First is Wat Trimit, with the world’s largest solid-gold statue. Next is Wat Pho, which houses one of the largest reclining Buddha images in Thailand, and is also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. And finally, situated in the Grand Palace complex, Wat Phra Kaew is considered the kingdom’s most sacred temple and is home to the Emerald Buddha, a dark green statue carved from a single jade stone. The former royal residence, the Grand Palace, adjoins the temple.

After an authentic Thai lunch in a riverside restaurant, this afternoon you explore Bangkok by boat, one of the best ways to see the city. On a long-tail motor boat, you navigate along the Chao Phraya River and the canals of Thonburi, which with its homes and temples offers a contrast to the modern city center and displays why Bangkok is nicknamed the “Venice of the East.” You make a final stop at the colorful Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Returning to your serene hotel in the early evening, you can relax in the pool, spa, or your riverview room after this full-day Bangkok immersion.

Day 3

Bangkok

Private guided tour of Ayutthaya and return to Bangkok by river cruise

Early this morning, you make your way north out of Bangkok by private car through lush countryside to the ancient city of Ayutthaya, the former capital of Siam. Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, Ayutthaya was the Thai capital for 417 years, and features many ancient ruins and UNESCO-listed temples and stupas. A total of 33 kings of five dynasties ruled the kingdom until it was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. You also proceed to the Summer Palace of King Rama V with its mixture of Thai, Chinese, and Gothic architecture. You return with your private guide to Bangkok by boat and are served lunch on board while cruising down the Chao Phraya River, watching the transition from rural life to the busy urban center. Upon arrival in Bangkok, you are transferred to your hotel at Bangkok’s airport, where you rest and rejuvenate before your onward travels.
