Day 1

Zagora Desert

Arrival in Ouarzazate and transfer to desert camp with stop en route for lunch; Guided camel trek, easy

Your adventure begins in Ouarzazate, the southern Moroccan city and gateway to the Sahara Desert, where you are met by a driver and local guide at the airport for the four-hour drive (170 miles) to M’Hamid— next to the last major oasis one encounters on the way south into the greater Sahara. The area was historically important as the site (Sidi Khalil) where trade caravans gathered before setting off to Timbuktu and other destinations. After a stop for lunch, you continue to your luxurious tented camp and, as the sun sets, enjoy an hour-long guided dromedary trek through the undulating dunes in the erg, or the “sand sea” of Ch’gaga. Welcomed with torches, a candlelight meal, and indulgent details at your desert camp, you experience the intensity of your first night under the desert sky.

Le Red Sand Tented Camp

Ch’gaga dunes, Morocco

This luxury tented desert camp in the Ch’gaga Dunes of southern Morocco’s Sahara Desert has six tents (each 30 square meters) containing unexpected luxurious touches, such as king-sized beds, plush fabrics, and individual bathrooms with hot and cold running water and toilets. Sustainably designed and surrounded by dunes and wide vistas as a base for desert excursions, the camp features fine meals served alfresco on traditional Moroccan rugs, cushions, and low tables; massage services are available upon request.

Day 2

Zagora Desert

Full day in desert camp with options of camel ride, dune excursion with easy (2½ hours) walk

As you enjoy morning tea or coffee surrounded by desert tranquility, you can choose your excursion for the day. One option is an easy guided camel trek, during which your guide points out the various landscape of erg and regs (“desert pavement”), the subtle flora and fauna, as well as stories of nomadic life, pausing midday for an authentic lunch of tagine, bread, and black tea. Alternatively, you may set off for an easy guided walk in the dunes, starting with about an hour transfer in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, with a picnic lunch stop. Returning to the camp in the afternoon, you may choose to indulge in a massage in your tent before later enjoying drinks and dinner under the stars, celebrating this unique desert exploration.

Day 3

Zagora Desert

Transfer from the desert camp to Ouarzazate via “seven kasbahs” excursion via four-wheel-drive vehicle and visit of Tamegroute

After a final breakfast overlooking the vast Sahara, you make the return journey to Ouarzazate. Starting your journey with the seven small villages of M’hamid, offering a glimpse into the history and culture of the region, you learn more about the region’s different peoples—the Bounou Berbers, Arabs from Ouled Driss, and the ancient Jewish groups. Time permitting, you visit the Museum of Traditional Nomadic Life in M’hamid.

You continue on to the village of Tamegroute, an important religious and scholarly center since the 11th century as the home of the Nasiriyya Sufi order. You visit the library here, once one of the most extensive collections in North Africa, and the artisans producing the town’s unique traditional green-glazed pottery. After lunch in Zagora, you are transferred to Ouarzazate, where you make connections for onward travels.
